Hornets wheelchair team crowned Grand Final winners

It was a successful Sunday afternoon for Rochdale Hornets' wheelchair team, who defeated North Wales Crusaders 42-22 in the Betfred Wheelchair Championship Grand Final at Belle Vue Leisure Centre.

It means Pete Hird's side end the season with two pieces of silverware to their name: the League Leaders' Shield and Grand Final trophy. 

Tom Graves opened the scoring for the Hornets, and further tries followed for Kyran Holt (2), Callum Young (2) and Wes Groot (2), who also added 14 points from the tee. 

Leading 36-6 at half-time, the Hornets had to weather a fightback from North Wales as they got themselves back to within 14 points, before a late try and conversion from Groot sealed the win in Manchester. 

"We capped off our season in style yesterday, delivering a composed, ruthless Grand Final performance to secure the title," head coach Hird said. 

"The intensity was there from the first whistle - sharp execution, disciplined defence, and a collective effort that never dipped.

"Big moments were taken, pressure was absorbed, and the our identity shone through when it mattered most. A champion’s finish to a champion’s campaign.

"Our success isn't just measured by trophies, but by the dedication, sacrifice and belief shown every step of the journey.
