Dec O’Donnell becomes 10th new signing for 2025

Rochdale Hornets have announced the signing of hooker Dec O’Donnell on a one-year deal ahead of the 2025 season.

The 26-year-old arrives following a brief hiatus from the professional game, having last played for Wigan St Patricks in 2024 and Ashton Bears in 2023.

O’Donnell, a former Ireland international, enjoyed his best years at Workington Town, where he scored 12 tries in 35 games across two stints with the club.

He has also previously represented Leigh and Oldham.

“I’m really happy to have signed for Rochdale after a short break from the game,” O’Donnell said.

“After speaking with Gary and hearing the vision he has for the club, it was really a no-brainer.

“I’m looking forward to the 2025 season, when hopefully we can go one better than last year.”

Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton said: “I’m delighted to have a player of Dec’s experience and quality on board.

“He’s been out of the game for quite a while, but he’s come through some good systems and he’ll add good experience in a place we need it after losing Aiden Roden.

“Having Oli Burton and Dec in the building now gives us great strength in depth, in a vital area of the team.”

Gary Thornton’s side are back in action this Sunday, with a clash away at local rivals Oldham to come in the return of the Law Cup.
