Ben Bird appointed head coach of Rochdale Hornets Women
Ben Bird has been appointed head coach of Rochdale Hornets’ women’s team, which will return for the 2025 season.
Bird is no stranger to coaching female rugby league in Rochdale, having spent time as head coach of the women’s team, which formed in 2013, while it was under the banner of the Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation.
He arrives ahead of a prospective first season in the WRLA Northern League Two, after an application was submitted to join ahead of the 2025 season.
The relaunched Hornets Women will be based at the club’s new Balderstone Park community hub, also known as ’The Hive’, where they will train and play.
On his return to the club, Bird said: I've been involved with the women's team at the Hornets before, coaching when it was under the foundation, and we've always ensured that there was a positive, supportive environment for the ladies, with some real team and individual success stories.
“This time around, we are firmly under the club banner. The level of support and investment we'll be able to offer the ladies is next level, and the potential for growth is really exciting.
“With the number of interested players already looking better than ever, I can't wait to get stuck into the role.”
Rochdale Hornets general manager Matt Rigby said: "We're thrilled to welcome Ben back to the club as the new head coach for our women's team.
“As a local lad and lifelong supporter of the club, Ben truly understands what it means to wear the Hornets badge.
“His passion for the club and commitment to developing talent align perfectly with our goals for the future, and his experience and understanding of the club's core values will be invaluable as we build a strong, competitive women's team.
“We can't wait to see what he brings to the squad."
