Hornets Women to wear unique shirts on Superhero Day

This Sunday against Leigh Miners Rangers, Rochdale Hornets Women will wear shirts not only adorned by their own surnames on the back, but by the name of a real-life female superhero in their lives on the front.

Whether it is someone inspirational, someone ill, or someone that has recently passed away, the initiative will allow our Hornets Women to celebrate the club’s third annual Superhero Day in a poignant way.

The name of each player’s real-life superhero will feature on the front of their shirt, underneath the Hornets logo. 

Women’s head coach Ben Bird explained: “The Superhero Day has become a high point of the season for everyone involved. From the outside it might appear a bit of a gimmick, but the reality is it's a celebration. 

“The whole club being involved this year is fantastic, and it helps us recognise being a part of something bigger. 

“This year we've used it as an opportunity to celebrate and recognise some of our real life female heroes. It's quite a poignant moment for some of our ladies who are going through difficult times with close female relatives, which makes it even more special.” 

On the pitch, it will be an important weekend for the Hornets Women.

A win would mathematically confirm survival in the club’s debut season in the Northern League 1, with the play-offs still a possibility. 

“We have a very strong squad that have been working hard all season,” Bird added.

“At times, we’ve just lacked a bit of cohesion at points, but that's appearing in training and more importantly in games, as we saw in some of the rugby we played against Greece. 

“As always, the girls are just excited to play, and I know they'll do themselves, the club and their families proud regardless of the result.”
