Sean Penkywicz announces retirement from rugby league

Rochdale Hornets hooker - and captain - Sean Penkywicz has announced his retirement from rugby league with immediate effect.

The 40-year-old calls time on a fantastic career spanning 22 years in which he represented Halifax, Huddersfield Giants, Leigh Centurions, Toronto Wolfpack and Workington Town before joining Hornets.

He also represented Wales at international level, for whom he won four caps.

The 2010 Championship winner said: “I feel like it’s the right time to step away from the game.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have a long, enjoyable, career and I’d like to thank everyone who’s helped make that possible.

“I’ve loved my years at Hornets and am proud of the progress we’ve made – as a team – in my time here.

“It’s an exciting group of players that I’m proud to have been a part of, and I’m sure the boys will continue to progress in the coming seasons.”

Rochdale Hornets would like to express its huge gratitude to Sean for his efforts and professionalism, during his time at the club, and also wish him the very best in his life after rugby league.
