Paul Brearley extends Hornets stay

Rochdale Hornets is delighted to announce the re-signing of experienced forward Paul Brearley for the 2022 Betfred League 1 campaign.

Brearley, 29, previously featured for Batley and Halifax before returning to the game to join the club mid-way through the 2021 season to help cover injuries.

Now, the former Mayfield forward will link up with head coach Matt Calland for pre-season and enjoy a full season at the Crown Oil Arena.

“The decision was made based on how much as a team and personally we under achieved last year,” he said.

“We never managed to get any real momentum due to injuries and Covid. I really believe if we keep the core off this group together we can have a real go next year and I want to be a part of it.

“Playing under Matt (Calland) again has been great, and our 2022 goals have to be promotion, although it will be a very tough league with a few local derbies that we will look forward to.”

On the re-signing, head coach Calland added: “Delighted that Paul has agreed to play next season.

“He is great to have around the place and he has great leadership skills.

“He can play in multiple positions and is another local lad, having previously played at Rochdale Mayfield.

“I think we will see the best of Paul this season.”

Chairman Andy Mazey added: “Paul is big player for our club in every sense of the word. He’s highly respected within the group and while negotiating his deal it was evident throughout the process that he wanted to play for Matt Calland and his hometown club.

“I’m really excited to see him with a full pre season under his belt in 2022 as I’m sure our supporters will be.”
