Lewis Sheridan re-signs for 2022

Rochdale Hornets is thrilled to confirm the re-signing of Lewis Sheridan for the 2022 Betfred League 1 campaign.

The half-back or full-back originally joined the club from amateur side Rochdale Mayfield, and was the club’s top try scorer in 2021 with ten tries.

“It was a no-brainier really,” Sheridan said.

“The squad we had last year and with the announcements so far that’s added to the squad, it sets it up for a great season ahead for us.

“Fingers crossed we don’t have the injuries like last year and I think we’ll give the fans some really exciting rugby to watch and hopefully securing that promotion which all the boys will be wanting.

“Team goals are obviously promotion. I think what we have as a club on and off the field, it’s growing into something good, so as that keeps developing I can’t see why we can’t match it with some of the teams in the league above.

“Personal goals are to build on my last season. I think I went alright but I have bigger targets for myself, with hopefully more tries and just to be someone on the pitch that helps guide the lads around and work on controlling games.

“As for how the squad is shaping, I’ve mentioned how exciting it’ll be for the fans but as a player as well I’m looking forward to being a part of it all.

“There is plenty of talent and experience already signed up and also bringing in the experience of Gregg McNally, we’ll have a great balance to the team and them boys will be directing the team during the week and on match days.

"Then on the other scale, seeing how Dan Nixon and Ben Forster go for two young lads. I thought they were key players last year and really took their chance so it’ll be great to watch them go again and keep improving.”

On the re-signing, head coach Matt Calland said: “Lewis is a very important member of the squad.

“He is versatile and can play numerous positions. He is very good off the bench also and can also come on and change our attack.

“He has rugby intelligence and is very good at sniffing a try out. I’m delighted he has put pen to paper for another season.”

On the latest news, Chairman Andy Mazey added: “Lewis is an integral part of Matt’s group and represents the core values of Rochdale Hornets superbly.

“He was an inspiration supporting our little man Freddie Lowe and family this year through some extremely difficult times and we couldn’t be prouder of him.

“It’s been evident while negotiating a new deal with Lewis that he’s highly motivated to build on his performances and ten tries in 2021.

“We are therefore delighted he is on board and it’s a big thumbs up from Freddie who will smiling right now while watching over us I’m sure.”
