Featherstone Lionesses v Rochdale Hornets Ladies match report

The latest match report from Rochdale Hornets Ladies.

A trip across the pennines it was for the ladies over the weekend.  After a scorching hot week previously, it was a lot cooler and the ladies had trained a lot better.  The games started tough, a knock on from kick-off led to a Featherstone try and conversion which was quickly followed by another in a similar spot.  12-0 down in the blink of an eye.

The girls got their heads in the game with good hands and a burst from Rachel Muir from the halfway line, a 50 metre dash to score and a conversion by Harriet Widdup. That was to be the only points of the half for Hornets as errors and penalties kept marching Featherstone up the field who then scored another 22 points without reply. Half-time 34 – 6.

The second half was much more evenly contested.  Hornets opened the scoring through great hands again across the face of the line which led to Anna Simpson barging over, great teamwork.  Converted out wide by Claire Collins.

The play was a little stop start due to a handful of injuries but Hornets played some sparkling rugby which propelled them forward which a huge gain advantage.  After conceding a try, Claire took matters into her own hands and made a huge kick down field into open space, a further chip on got the ball near to the line, for Niamh Mullins to pounce on a well worked effort from the right edge.  The game was coming to a close but Hornets tails were up, they were flying with the ball in hand and getting over the advantage line with ease.  The final play of the game saw our youngest member Libby Hadfield battle to retrieve the ball and ground it for her first try in her second game.

Full-time 46-20.

A valiant second half display that leads Hornets on nicely to the cup quarter finals v Whitley Bay next week.
